England Social Hierarchy In the 19th Century

In the beginning of 19th century, England was divided into three social hierarchies. There are, Aristocrats, Middle class, and Lower class. An Ideal Husband story is about friends, spouses, a stock swindle, back mail, and rising young politician in England in the late 19th century.
   
    Aristocrats is the highest power, authority and social status holder of the 19th century  England social hierarchy were the Aristocrats. These people usually were not involved in any manual work since the time was so evaluable o do such work that were not artistic and could be completed by normal people. This Aristocrats include following profiles :
  • The royal family
  • The spiritual lords
  • Temporal lords
  • Great officer of the state : baronets, knights, country gentleman
Aristocrats
Middle Class is referred to a wide band of the England population. This class further got divided into two parts depending on the social status and economical power. While in the middle class, divided into two parts depending on the social status and economical power  :
  • Upper middle class, include:
    • factory owners, large scale business men, bankers, doctors, lawyers, engineers, clergymen.
  • Lower middle class, include
    • : small scale business men, shopkeepers, merchants, civil servants.
Middle Class

The last hierarchy is lower class, this class was further sub categorized into two parts:
  • The Working Class
    • This was the upper lower class in the hierarchy. These were men, women and children who used to do the lowest level work for the country. This included following profiles:
      • Labor, factory workers, seamstresses, miners, and sweepers.
  • The Poor 
    • These were the people living on the charity. They were not involved in any work.
The working class of The Lower Class


The relation between social hierarchy and the characters in An Ideal Husband are:
Sir Robert Chiltern is in the lower class, because he was raised in the poor family before he get a higher position.
Mrs. Chevley is a middle class woman, because she is a wife of a rich man.
Lord Goring is an aristocrat, because he was raised in the aristocrat’s family.
