Drama Appreciation and Criticism of "An Ideal Husband" Historical Background

The author wrote “An Ideal Husband” during the decade known as the twilight years of England’s Victorian era. This period was distinguished by England’s growth as an industrial and imperial giant and increasingly conservatism in social mores. Moreover, any immoral thing is considered taboo at that time. For instance, Lord Goring in the story is described as a well-bred expressionless face. He is clever, dandy, he would be annoyed if he were considered romantic. He plays with life, and it on perfectly good terms with the world. He is fond of being misunderstood (Act 1 scene 1C page 7). He is suspected as a gay man at the beginning of the story. The term “gay” is considered very taboo and immoral.
The author was trying to convey individual freedom by using the character Lord Goring. It is proven by his (Lord Goring) behaviour during the whole play. Oscar wilde broke the stereotype of ideal husband through this play.
